RENTING A CAR IN LOS CABOS or
BRINGING YOUR CAR ACROSS THE BORDER?
The limitless places to explore in Mexico are really best seen by car. Be aware, though, that the driving laws and customs may be very different than what you’re accustomed to.
You’ll need all of the following items to bring your own car across the border to explore Mexico’s wonders:
– a temporary car permit (this can only be obtained at the Mexican border).
– a car insurance issued for Mexico (insurance of your country is not accepted).
– a valid driver’s license
– a current car registration and an original car title (original is required).
NOTE: your financing bank will not be happy if you leave the country without notifying them since they will have great difficulty reposessing their property should the need arise later.
– a valid International credit card
– a temporary importation application.
– a signed declaration dated with your scheduled return to your country.
When vacationing in Mexico, you’ll have plenty of options when it comes to getting where you want to go. It’s easy to obtain a car rental here, but why not try the local city or inter-baja bus system for an insider’s view of the area, or one of the local ‘adventure’ buses that provide tour-guide presentations?
For many though, we understand that privacy, comfort, and the ability to stop intermittently at will to explore and just adore, requires a personal vehicle. Some credit card companies automatically cover you when you rent a car, but this insurance is not always valid in México. Check with your credit card company prior to your arrival, if you plan to rent a car in México. You will need your U.S. drivers license (this is valid in México) and a major credit card. Be aware that many companies also have minimum age limits for rentals in México.
Most of the major car rental firms are well represented in México: below is a list of US contact numbers to aid in your pre-reservation, as well as site links in order to complete your reservation in advance. There are also localized independent operators in most cities.
Be absolutely certain you understand what your coverage contains, and don’t leave the rental office without fully understanding what amount will actually be billed to your credit card. Frequently there are hidden fees expressed in the documentation, but not mentioned to the vacationer.
You’ll find a gas station very near the airport for filling up prior to returning the vehicle. Just keep some pesos with you and fill it up yourself unless you don’t mind paying the exhorbitant per gallon fees the rental agency will bill you.
Check CaboExpo for an interesting description of the rental process, local rental agency email and phone contact information, and to prepare you for the car rental phenomenon in Baja Sur.
For your convenience, we’ve compiled the most recent list of offices represented in Los Cabos with links to websites for booking and Los Cabos location prior to your arrival below. Please NOTE: this information is gathered through the GringoPages English phone directory.
