When it comes right down to it, purchasing a vacation package can be quite similar to purchasing an investment property for your future in paradise; we all want it to be unforgettable, but we don’t want to pay an unforgettable price for it! As you prepare to travel to Baja Sur, mexico you will find many online informational sites to assist you in your search for information and great deals, but we at Cabo Realty Pros have a Cabo-Living expertise based on our own experiences living here in paradise. Or, you can plan your trip around local events and activities by referring to guides prepared by local vendors to make your planning as enjoyable as your visit will be. Here are just a few additional tips to keep in mind as you bring your dream vacation to life:
If you’re looking to avoid jam-packed streets and hotels, avoid mainland Mexico’s southern coast between April and September. This is peak season for North American spring break and for European travel. From mid-October to May the weather is temperate and the tourist numbers die down so rates drop slightly. On the other hand, this is also considered High Season in Baja Sur.
November through June is when most empty-nesters, baby-boomers and investors in general tend to head south to escape the cold of winter months around the globe.
As a side note, if you haven’t already invested in a Fractional or Timeshare, remember that Mexico’s hotels are most crowded and most expensive on weekends. The best deals are offered midweek, so you might want to keep that in mind as you schedule your flight times. If you’re able to do this, you win twice because flights are usually cheaper mid-week, also. A great alternative is found in renting one of the many villas available for short term right in Cabo. Just remember, they usually must be booked months in advance to ensure availability. Your experience can be worry-free by checking our additional online informational links available for Cabo, San Jose del Cabo and East Cape specifically.
Hotel rates quoted in travel books are usually the maximum rate that a hotel charges if you’ve walked in off the street. In Mexico everyone bargains for a better rate first. Remember to ask politely for a better rate or ask if any special rates apply to you (families and seniors are offered special rates throughout the year). If you find yourself spending more and more of your time in this temperate climate and decide you’d like to speak more than ‘restaurant-fluent’ Spanish, you can find many online courses to aid in developing your bi-lingual abilities, but here is a friendly start on the path to your second language:
Of all this region’s innumerable pleasures and activities, two are prominent: fishing and golfing. Cabo San Lucas is famed for its acrobatic billfish and world class golf, with 144 holes at last count, and still expanding. Los Cabos is the ultimate golf travel destination. The collection of golf courses are some of the top in the world such as: Cabo Real, El Dorado, Cabo del Sol Ocean Course and Palmilla, designed by Jack Nicklaus, Cabo Real designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., the Cabo del Sol Desert Course designed by Tom Weiskopf, and the Raven Cabo San Lucas Country Club designed by Pete Dye. Greg Norman’s first 18 hole, signature course located in San Jose del Cabo at the Puerto Los Cabos Marina and multi-million dollar community, is due to open for play in 2007. Two more Jack Nicklaus golf courses will be opening along the Pacific Ocean in 2008 as part of the Cabo Pacifica community development.
The avid fisherman is able to find Fractional or full time Cabo-Living in beautifully exclusive developments such as Capella Pedregal, where a private yacht fleet for fishing or entertaining is at the disposal of members. Avid golfers have a myriad of opportunities to live on the green at stunning 5-star developments that stretch from the airport in San Jose del Cabo to Cabo San Lucas at the tip of the peninsula.
For those whose interests lie elsewhere, there are wonderful adventures waiting for you as well. Los Cabos has become famous for its endless variety of activities, great restaurants, hot nightlife, and outstanding fishing, and golf.
Whale watching, romantic sunrise and sunset cruises and glass bottom boats can get you and a loved one off to a great start. You can also enjoy all types of watersports, such as kayaking, sailing, boogie boarding, water-skiing, snorkeling, diving and parasailing. Equipment can be rented at Medano Beach, the main beach of Cabo San Lucas.
Cabo offers an incredible range of outdoor opportunities for those after more heart thudding adventures. From horseback riding in the hills or on the beach, strolling one of many local beaches with that special someone, to desert and mountain challenges. Guided day hikes and eco-tours to backcountry sites include the Hot Springs near Santiago, a small village an hour north of San Jose. This is an easy uphill hike through a maze of boulders and rock formations. At the top are pools of clear water perfect for relaxing and picnicking. Other hiking and natural history tours feature fossil fields, challenging hikes into the Sierra de la Laguna and day trips to old mining ghost towns.
Snorkeling, sailing, sunset cruises and whale watching tours are available for private parties, or you can join a public outing for fun in the sun. SCUBA diving is excellent for all levels near the arch, and for the less experienced, try Pelican Rock, Neptune’s Finger and the Sea Lion Colony during your visit with us. Advanced divers will be amazed by the Abyss, 100 feet from the arch.
If looking for a surfing or windsurfing experience, the best waves for surfers can be found at Costa Azul, especially during the months between June and October. The most ideal place for Windsurfing is 45 miles north of Los Cabos airport at Los Barriles. The main beach area in Cabo San Lucas offers body surfing waves and afternoon winds.
If you’re looking for mindless fun, check out the Cabo after-hours circuit. For romance, there are beachside dinners, luxury accommodations, dazzling sunsets, and dinner shows, but for those simply wanting respite from their everyday lives, true escape is just a spa away.
