What Makes Los Barilles Unique?
Each winter, strong El Norte winds blow down the Sea of Cortés, creating ideal wind and kite surfing conditions – consistent 15 to 30 mile per hour winds – in some coastal areas of Baja California Sur.
Los Barilles and Buena Vista are two seaside areas that still retain much of the kick-back pace that made Baja popular! Fabulous sandy beaches, clean beautiful seas filled with fish, crystal clear air, and a remote feeling that seems far removed from civilization.
The height of the windsports season occurs in January, when the world’s best kiteboarders come to the beautiful East Cape town of Los Barilles. Since 2010 the area has been home to a world sporting competition the North American IKA Kite Foil Championship, crowning a Lord and Lady of the Wind, and awarding over $22,000 in prize money.
The road south from Los Barilles also skirts miles of postcard-perfect beaches, with a couple of small, well maintained hotels ready to serve the needs of Baja travelers.
The area is still famous for fishing, although surfing and kayaking are increasingly popular. The hotels still do a great job of taking care of visitors.
